Social media has become one of the main communication channels in modern society, and this tool can be leveraged to help prevent environmental disasters. One of society’s major problems is the expansion of enterprises, which are often carried out without observing minimum environmental preservation requirements. This study aims to analyze the role of social media in disseminating information and its impact on raising environmental awareness across society. The method used is a literature review with a critical-narrative approach. Analyzing the impact of social media use to promote awareness through the transmission of information about environmental damage and disasters is highly relevant. It is concluded that society, equipped with information via social media, becomes a popular oversight agente, just as necessary as state oversight itself (internal and centralized, such as Ministries, Secretariats, and other bodies, or internal and decentralized, such as regulatory agencies), compelling major companies from various sectors to act in favor of an ecologically balanced environment. Thus, to meet social pressure and demonstrate concern for sustainable development, companies adopt "green marketing."
